LAST LAP

                                        LOOKING BACK
       DECEMBER 2011
A Word From Club President Gary Stein

In 1963, while scouting for some parts for my Race Car, I met a person who would become my best friend forever.  His name was Jim Marko.

This guy would be my best friend and was like a brother.

We did lots of things together, both as buddies and with our families.

He was an employee of mine, as well as an excellent small engine mechanic, and advisor when things went badly. He was also always ready to party when things got better.

We rode snowmobiles together, and repaired and built many racecars over the years.

Jim’s started racing at the Drag Strip, where he raced his 1957 Pontiac, which he later raced at Elko Speedway.

When I started racing on a regular basis he was my main go to guy, especially when Skip Fredrickson drove my car.

When Frenchy Vasser tried to steal him for his Pit Crew, my brother Mike and I quickly put Jim back to work for us both on our local racing and as we traveled to races with IMCA and USAC Stocks Cars.

The success we had was great considering we had no sponsor

In the early 1970’s I became acquainted with Marv Marzofka and Dick Trickle.  The relationship grew, and Jim followed to Wisconsin.

In 1979 we took the Championships at four (4) tracks.

When My brother and I started Vintage Racing with the IMCA Old Timers, Jim quickly followed, and on every occasion would get behind the wheel and drive our race car.

This was quite a feat since he had lost his right arm and right eye in an industrial accident.

In 1997 he and his wife Mary traveled to all of the NASCAR races, and after completing this goal, he would stay in Florida in the Winter and return to Minnesota in the Summer.

When we had an IMCA Old Timers event he would help anywhere he was needed.

I am sure that I have missed a lot of things that happened to us along the way over the last 45 years, but in May 2011, Jim returned to Minnesota like always with some warning signs to his health, so he went to the V.A. Medical Center in Minneapolis, and was told he was full of cancer.

We all lost a great person on October 21st 2011, when Jim passed away.  Please keep his family in your prayers.

Now back to some things about our Club.

I have received several calls from Club Members about our new rules for 2012 thinking that because of our recommended or suggested safety rules that their racecar is no longer legal.  THIS IS NOT TRUE!!!

The only time that a rule will be changed is if a Race Promoter at a given track states an item will be mandatory for that Race Event.

This includes Sprint Cars, and other open cars as well.  WE HAVE NO CLUB RULE MAKING IT MANDITORY TO HAVE A CAGED CAR.

Vintage un-caged cars can and will be allowed to race.  Again as I said, if you raced with us before, and your car was legal then it is legal now in 2011 and in 2012.  Again the only time that this is not true is if a Promoter will not, or does not allow caged cars to run at his venues.

Any questions call me 651-283-8167, or talk to me at the next meeting.

Now I would like to ask all of you to help promote this club in whatever way that you are able.  If you have an idea, let either one of the Board Members know or contact me.

I am also looking for help signing up race event for 2012.  How about a volunteer!

Have a great Holiday Season.  See you all at the Banquet on Jan. 21, 2012, and at our next meeting Feb. 5th 2012 at the Savage Legion Club.

Call me anytime.

 Keep Turning Left!

Gary

P.S. Lets not forget our fellow club members this holiday Season.

Paul Anderson is at Augustana Health Care Center of Apple Valley.

Gene Fecter is at the Minnesota Veterans Home near Minnehaha Park in Minneapolis.

  NOVEMBER 6, 2011 MEMBERSHIP MEETING

Our President, Gary Stein, called the meeting to order.

Mike Stein gave the Secretaries Report.  It was accepted as submitted.

Jon Ellingson gave the Treasurers Report.  We have $3516.86 in the Checking Account, and $500.51 in Savings.  Thus giving us a total of $4017.37 prior to the start of this meeting.

Gary encouraged all of us to stop and see Gene Fecter.  He is at the Minnesota Soldiers Home near Minnehaha Park in Minneapolis.

OLD BUSINESS

 BANQUET

Big Don Belkengren gave us the input from his survey of our members as to what the membership wanted, expected, and would be willing to pay for an evening Banquet in January.

The club will pick up the cost of the Hall Rental from the Savage Legion, and the Tip as well.  We will need at least 30 people to insure that we have a private room.

Lets get involved and support your Club.

Big Don will be sending out information concerning the Banquet via regular mail.  Meanwhile, put JANUARY 21, 2012 on your calendar and plan to attend.

RACING RULES COMMITTEE

Skip Reineke, Paul Dolphy, and Carter Naveson have been working on updating our Racing Rules, which will go into effect for the 2012 Season.

The rules were reviewed, voted on, and accepted by the Board at their meeting November 6, 2011.

The rules have been broken down by Car Classes. However, the first 4 pages pertain to all classes. They consist of General Rules, Flag Rules, and Car Safety.

All members will be required to pick up, and sign an acknowledgment that they have personally picked up their copy of the 2012 Rules.

This will be done at our next Membership Meeting on February 5, 2012.  PUT IT ON YOUR CALENDAR!!!!

Roger Wade and Dick Pottsmith have volunteered to be Tech Inspectors.  Any questions on the 2012 Rules should be directed to any one of the Rules Committee members, or Roger Wade 763-786-6807 or Dick Pottsmith 769-434-6224.

DON’ FORGET, 2012 DUES IS DUE NOW!!!  If you haven’t paid it yet, send it to John Ellingson via mail right away.

ELECTION RESULTS

Our thanks to Skip and Paula Reineke for handling the nomination and election process this year.

At our last membership meeting nominations were handled, and the nominees’ accepted the nomination. At the time we had two (2) nominations.  One (1) for Vice President, in David Stone, and one (1) for a Board Member, in Bill Mueller Jr. to replace retiring Mike Gaspard for a three (3) year term.

As per our Bi-Laws, having no opposition for either office, David Stone and Bill Mueller were voted in by acclamation, thus eliminating the need for mailing ballots etc.

Dave and Bill will start their office tenure January 1, 2012.  Congratulations to both David and Bill.

NEW BUSINESS

Jim Heiland explained how ASA Midwest Stockcar Association has shown an interest in organizing a Vintage Race Car Touring Group.

In order to solidify a need for an organizational starting point, it was thought that our Club, the IMCA Old Timers could fit that “bill” since we has Bi-Laws, Rules and an organization.

With that in mind, there is a meeting set for November 19, 2011 at the Wintergreen Resort and Conference Center in Baraboo, Wisconsin.  The meeting will involve racers, car owners, Track owners, and promoters.

We expect that we will have additional members added to our Club if this idea becomes a reality by virtue of the additional cars from Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana that have showed an interest in such a touring group.

Jim was here asking for our Club’s permission to pursue this idea, and also be the sanctioning body for this traveling tour.

By a voice vote, the sanctioning of this tour was voted on and accepted.

HISTORIAN

At our last membership meeting Skip Pollack proposed that our Club revive the position of Club Historian.  He even recommended Mark Langer who has a lot of information on the IMCA, and is well acquainted with our Club as well, to be asked to be our Historian.

Today Skip brought Mark Langer to our Membership meeting, and introduced him.

Skip outlined the need to revive the position, and when asked Mark accepted to start work on re-establishing the Club Historian.

We are all very pleased that Mark accepted the position, and gave him a Free Membership in the IMCA Old Timers to show our gratitude.  Thanks Mark.

With that in mind all of us that have anything that is related to the IMCA, or the IMCA Old Timers should contact Mark and let him work with you to categorize it, so as to be able to display the item, or information at our events or at our meetings.

CAGED CARS/UN-CAGED CARS

Gary Stein made mention of the fact that for some unknown reason many people, including some of our own members, have the idea that the IMCA Old Timers do not allow Un-Caged car to run at our events.

THIS IS SIMPLY NOT TURE!!!

The IMCA Old Timers want to run these cars.  It has been Track Promoters that have made this ruling at their facility.  However, we do have events where there is no un-caged rule, and we want to try to get event at those Tracks so that all of our Race Cars, and Members can participate.

We already have one event planned where All Classes of Race Cars can plan to participate next Summer.  Put it on you calendars.  JULY 21, 2012.  Arlington Speedway, Arlington, Minnesota.

NEW MEMBER ALERET

We have a new member.  His name is John Beeney.  Welcome aboard to both him and his wife, Barbara.

Our newest member John Beeney who just joined today won THE 50/50.

Dick Pottsmith won THE CLOTHING drawing.

OUR BANQUET IS JANUARY 21, 2012.

OUR NEXT MEMBERSHIP MEETING IS FEBRUARY 5, 2012.

LAST LAP.  This is to inform all of you that “Big” Jim Marko passed away a couple of weeks back.  Jim was a very very good mechanic, and also a great Race Car builder, having been involved building many of our cars.  He was always ready to work on the Race Car, and if we had a problem finding what was wrong with the car, it was usually Jim that would find the problem.
Jim was Gary Stein’s best friend, and was always on Mike’s Stein’s Pit Crew starting at Elko and Race Way Park, and even in the USAC Stock Car days, with all of the traveling. Jim was of course involved when Gary and Mike started Vintage Racing and was considered to be our Brother.
Jim was one of the early members of the IMCA Old Timers, and did a lot of work at our Arlington, Mn. Events in the early years.

Jim was 71 years old and died from Cancer. He is missed!!

WE HAVE A SPONSOR FOR THE 2011 SEASON.

Yes it is true!! The IMCA OLDTIMERS have a sponsor for the events scheduled for 2011. The sponsor is POLYDOME, and they are located in Litchfield, MN.

They also are the owners of I-94 SPEEDWAY in Fergus Falls, MN.

PolyDome is owned by Dick and Karla Johanneck, and have a very unusual Racecar called an “Outlaw Wedge Car”.

Dick and Karla brought their Racecar to our Swap Meet. I must say that the car is very unique to say the least.

A picture of it can be seen on our website with all of the pictures from the Swap meet. They are anticipating a Vintage Racer Event in August. So all of you Dirt Guys keep you eyes and ears open for an announcement for a scheduled date.

IMCA OLDTIMERS 5TH ANNUAL SWAP MEET.

The Swap meet was held on April 30th. While the weather did not co-operate, there were swappers, and a fair number of buyers that did attend the rain soaked event.

A big thanks to all of those of you that were there to help, especially to Jim Boman, who had everything under control in the Concession Stand, and of course to Rick Stine for controlling the gates.

However, the biggest thanks goes to Jim Heiland who set up the whole thing with Raceway Park again this year. (Pictures on our website)

Gordy Mason.
For those of you that do not know, Gordy Mason died on Sunday night May 1st. I sent out a notice via e-mail early in the week that followed his death.

I spoke to Linda, Gordy’s wife, at the funeral home and she said that her Daughter Michelle is in the middle of re-painting his Racecar and hopes to have it at Raceway Park for our race event on June 12th.

Lets keep Linda Mason and the rest of Gordy’s family in our prayers

Jake’s Funeral. A public ceremony for Jake will be held at Lakewood Cemetery at 11:30 at the Chapel at the cemetery on Saturday May 14th.

There will be a luncheon at Famous Dave’s on Hennepin and Lake Street following the service. If you intend to attend the Luncheon, it will be necessary to contact Jake’s sister, Martha Peterson for a head count.

Her number is 651-429-7601.

You must contact her first if you are going to the luncheon!

2011 ROSTER

Jim Heiland’s Annual Racer Preview was well attended. However, as you know the weather on the originally scheduled day,April 30th, was ALL SNOW!!!

It was postponed a week later with much fun and anticipation for the up coming year of racing. (Pictures are on our website.) Thanks to all that attended.

This is the first try to publish, at least to 38 of our 116 members via E-mail.  How it goes remains to be seen.  If you’re not happy with it let me know at the next Meeting, but be aware that if you’re not happy, I expect that you have a solution to go along with the problem.

THE WORLD OF WHEELS DISPLAY   2/25- 2/2711

I am pleased to say that the over all event was well attended with many thousands of people attending.

Our part, having an IMCA OLDTIMERS DISPLAY was an overwhelming success.

We had six (6) of our member’s racecars on display.  Our collective thanks to John Ellingson, Paul Dolphy, Coney Nelson, Art Abrams, Jim Heiland, and Leo Anderson for making their cars available for the show.

Do to the exposure of the show; we picked up 5 new members, 2 more sprint cars, a 1930’s midget, and a 1952 F1 Push Truck.

The Five New Members are:

Patrick Donohue   1980 Sprint Car

Dick Jackson         1952 F1 Push Truck

Tony Jones (son)    1930’s Midget

William Jones (father) Same as above

Wayne Simon        1985 Trostle Sprint Car

Welcome aboard!!!!

We have been in touch with the World Of Wheels Managers both upon leaving the Show on Sunday evening, and subsequently, and our hopes are very high that we will be asked to participate next year for their 50th Anniversary edition in Feb. of 2012.

If we do, we will be asked to have more cars on display.  So here is your chance Boys and Girls, to show off that “Hot Rod” of yours by keeping next February’s show in mind. I have taken the liberty of sending a thank you letter to Jack and Joyce DeJoy, the show managers, thanking them for the opportunity that they afforded us by asking our club to be part of the show.

There are some really nice Pictures of the Show, our Display, and the Racecars on our web site.  Also there is a nice article on the web site about the World Of Wheels event as well, including information about “Big Don” and Lynn Peterson’s Street Rods that were part of the MSRA display.

Between Don and Lynn they needed Big Don’s truck to haul all of the Hardware home.

IMCA OLDTIMERS 5th ANNUAL SWAP MEET

Don’t forget our SWAP MEET on APRIL 30TH.  Gate open at 8:00 A.M. I am going to attempt to attach a copy of the SWAP MEET FLIER to this e-mail.

BE SURE TO PRINT IT AND POST AT LEAST ONE COPY SOME PLACE NOTICIBLE!!!!!!

“Wild Bill”Mueller is home; at least that is what is know at this mailing.  We should all try to be sure to at least send him a card.  If one feels like stopping to see him it is wise to check ahead, and don’t stay too long and tire him out.

2011 Race and Event calendar is posted on our web site.

Things seem to be shaping up pretty well, and should be a lot of fun this season.

                               2011 ROSTER

I have attempted to send all e-mail members a copy of the 2011 Roster.  I’m not sure how successful it has been since there have been some problems with some of the e-mail addresses.

I have the latest version, including the five (5) new members available, and will attempt to send it to all of you that have e-mail.  It is dated 3/4/2011 in the upper left corner of the spreadsheet.

I can send it in both XL FORMAT, OR PDF FILE FORMAT.  If you have a preference let me know.  My e-mail address is mstein@frontiernet.net.

                           PARTS COUNTER

I have nothing to open the counter to try to sell.  However, if you do send it to me and I will put it into “PARTS INVENTORY”.

                            A LITTLE HELP

Two of the new members are Father and son.  They are Tony and William Jones.  They need help finding out some history about the Midget that they purchased some time in the past two (2) years.

It is a 1930’s vintage Midget, and is Number 77.   They bought it from a party in Benson, Minnesota, and were told that it had been one of several that someone in St. Paul, Minnesota had owned for many years.  Perhaps as long as when the Racer was actively being raced. Tony lives here in Minnesota, and his father live in Louisiana.

If you have any information call Tony at 651-356-9300.

            Next meeting:  MARCH 20TH AT 1:00 P.M.

Savage Legion; 12375 Princeton Ave. South Savage, Minnesota 55378.
